A culture-centric design approach shelled out the nomination for us in #Top700 product innovation worldwide.

A few days back, I wrote about “Why you should travel if you are a Designer/Artist….”. The blog reflects on my ongoing INDIA expedition where I picked up on many life lessons and explored my horizon as a traveler. India is rich in culture & diversity, travel in this country itself is a “Life experience” you can cherish for a lifetime.

Coming back to work, this year we managed to bag a nomination for Spark-Tech, a worldwide product innovation competition. Bingooo! We are in the #Top700 Product Innovation baby. I am thankful to all the members involved in the extensive journey of our platform revamp from Oct 2022. This year, this time when we had already marked up our product milestones, gave me ample time to sit back and scroll back to 2023. — travel continued. I managed to explore southern INDIA to an extent and found some interesting off-beat artistic locations’ amid loud music and weekend culture (Not a party animal :P)

"1 Platform, 200+ Products, 14+ Countries, 4mn users… Phew! It wasn’t a one-day job for sure. Working for this diverse audience requires a holistic understanding, patience, and strategic planning. Now, reflecting on it, thanks to the traveling which helped me to sharpen who I am today."

After almost walking across 12+ states in INDIA, I can conclude that at this point, “India is widely unexplored and there are wayyyyy more authentic places to visit than just for the sake of Insta feed!”. Be it Northern loudness, the stubbornness of the South, the Liberation of the West, or the calmness of the East. India is a recipe in itself. As a designer, you will find liberation, diversity, and accommodation almost hand in hand.

Design is an intensively extensive craft. Design binds culture and people and changes lives. It revolves around people who are using it. I wanted to reflect on the same thought while we were designing our product.

Consideration wasn’t just limited to the user but holistically all the aspects who got affected.

Product: 4 Stakeholder group,

Audience: 2mn Users,

Geography: 9+ Countries

Psychography: Newbie to experienced.

(Due to non-disclosure, I am not able to omit all the exclusive information here)

I twisted the above factors and my traveling pillars kept revolving around the challenges we were seeking by asking the following questions.

What is the goal of revamp? What are we targeting? etc.

Where we are at? Stage of product? etc.

What value we are bringing to the table?

Product considerations flipped to travel map,

Product: Country (India)

Audience: Population (Local/Urban)

Geography: States (Miles travelled)

Psychography: Age group, Mobility, Lifestyle etc.

Back in midway of 2023 we launched our highly anticipated universal product handbook and started running pilots. Post launch we kept on gathering the feedback, I conducted sessions with fellow designers, it always feels great when your efforts go noticed and making impact.

“This will be an informative guide for any new designer onboarding. A great initiative to unify common interaction. This would eliminate the need to constantly cope with new interaction and users will feel confident navigation through different modules.”

-Designer from Global Transportation sector

In a quarter, our approach showed measurable impact when we successfully cut down Design hand-off time from (Weeks to Days), consistent layouts across modules (Development library revamp), and Design repositioning (Improved product design lifecycle).

With this quick blog, I would like to take my major as a designer as follows.

Design and Travel go hand in hand. Travel introduces you to diversity. The design will help you uniformly bind them together. The same applies to your products too!
